Overview (Scope of Role)

The Plant Process Automation Engineer will manage the plant process automation software and hardware to ensure reliable operation and continuous improvement.  This individual will program ABB to improve plant process control metrics such as alarms per hour and standing alarms. Manage program exception reporting and work with experts to maintain and troubleshoot hardware issues. Provide automation support for new projects and plant optimization initiatives. Often, the Process Automation Engineer participates in various safety related activities such as Reliability, Process Safety, LPP analysis, LOPA and Global Mechanical Integrity (GMISS) support
 
This position will be onsite in Midland, Michigan. Monday - Friday. 
 

Responsibilities

  • Own and manage the plant Process Automation system software and hardware, and associated metrics such as Alarms per hour, Standing Alarms and Exceptions List.
  • Provide Programming support to new projects and Program changes as opportunities are identified through investigations and improvement suggestions.
  • Understands all applicable process technology (Mass ABS), equipment, and control technology (ABB). Works with Technical Advising and plant personnel it to improve operations, meet Business and plant goals.  (Production, cost, quality).
  • Participates in advanced trouble shooting and coaches others to learn these skills. Participate in the Plant On Call Rotation.
  • Provide Project and Production plant support to the facility as needed.
  • Implements best practices in operations in order to optimize operations.  Ensures Most Effective Technology (MET), and specific Operating Discipline requirements are in place.  
  • Initiates changes to Plant Operating procedures to ensure they are valid and up to date. Works with Production Technicians in this respect.
  • Networks with other engineers on site and within the global business to leverage knowledge on plant operations Example: Production, Improvement, etc.
  • As required, communicate technical information and issues to plant personnel, Technology or Expertise centers (PSTL, LPP owners, Reactive Chem, etc)

Qualifications

  • Bachelors Degree in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering from an accredited program
  • 3-5+ years of engineering experience (e.g. improvement, production, process, process control) or 1-3+ years of engineering experience in this technology with a Masters Degree in a relevant engineering discipline.
  • Previous ABB Experience Preferred
  • In order to keep required training time reasonable, must have 2 of the following 3:
    • Experience and knowledge of Mass ABS manufacturing technology and process.
    • Experience reading and light programming of ABB 800X process control systems.
    • 3+ years of experience in a chemical manufacturing plant which handles hazardous chemicals and understanding of the associated safety standards related to these operations.
