Overview

This job exists to provide leadership, operational expertise, technical, mechanical and hands-on assistance for safe operation of the entire Binders facility.  The following are some key responsibilities: 

  • Provides leadership to effectively organize and execute shift activities to achieve plant goals 

  • Able to effectively prioritize the shift activities and assigns tasks in MTL for completion. Holds operators accountable for their results. (Tier-4) 

  • Able to effectively motivate the shift to achieve plant goals 

  • Able to effectively work with a wide range of people including other shifts, maint, project crafts, TICA engineers, technical support staff. 

  • Takes the initiative to identify and address maintenance needs within the plant which are within the shift’s skill set. Works with operators and maintenance resources to implement repairs. 

  • Provide process and troubleshooting support, to supplement that from the operators, for all processes and related systems aligned to 743 Building. Demonstrate advanced troubleshooting skills and lead or participate in Root Cause Investigations 

  • Perform Shift Activity Coordinator role (Tier-4), Immediate Response and Permit Issuer roles 

  • Operates all processes, as necessary, within Binders. Includes prepping of equipment, analytical analysis as appropriate. Performs activities as per the Global Operating the Plant Role Expectations 

  • Promote an environment of teamwork while leading by example  

  • Provide operating discipline improvements to shift activities 

  • Creates procedures and updates existing ones. 

  • Ensure effective communication between shifts and day staff 

  • Stay current on all potential shift assignments as defined by the plant Production Development Progression (PDP). 

  • Perform competitive work practices. 

  • Complete safety checks. 

  • Provide process support as described in the Operate the Plant Role in the Binders facility. 

  • Perform Operate Plant global roles & plant support roles as determined by the unit role assignment process. 

  • Utilize electronic tools (e.g. electronic logbook, event and action tool, master task list, open plan, outlook). 

  • Follow applicable supporting work processes (e.g. Global Maint Work Process, Operate Plant Work Process, Material Flow Work Process, EH&S work process etc.) 

  • Participate in plant initiatives (e.g. involvement in teams, operating discipline improvements, work process implementation, work process tools). 

  • Demonstrate advanced troubleshooting skills and lead or participate in Root Cause Investigations. 

  • Communicate role related information between shifts and day staff. 

  • Provide first-line conflict resolution.  

  • Assure compliance to all rules and regulations for shift. 

  • Assure compliance with all EH&S requirements related to assigned roles.  

  • Ensure personal learning needs are achieved utilizing the available learning resources. 

  • Participate in reviews and implementation of plant projects; (e.g. Hazops, Mod 5 Simulation testing, Permit approval, Line Labeling, commissioning efforts to ensure a successful startup)

Responsibilities

This job encompasses operation of 743 building’s assets to safely and reliably produce S/B Binders.  Process troubleshooting, interpretation of lab analysis results and process adjustments are key to the operation of the plant.  The ability to learn and understand chemical processing, and to be able to function at a high level with the MOD V system is crucial to being successful in the job.   CWP is a job expectation; high proficiency in this area with the ability to replace ball valves (both manual & Automated), replace control valves, centrifugal pumps, AOD pumps, gasket changes, repair SR1 tubing and or air tubing and or repairing leaks on small runs of threaded piping.  Opening/clearing process lines due to plugging and or maintenance. 

The person in this job is expected to work within a team environment (shift team and operations team) and be capable of communicating effectively (both written and verbal) with peers, technical staff, interplant suppliers and customers, maintenance personnel, project teams, crisis response personnel, etc.  Use of all electronic Operate Plant WP tools is required. 

This job is subject to modifications as part of the implementation of the contract PDP language. 

Shift Schedules possible:  7 & 2 (weekend 12’s), subject to 5 & 2 (days, afternoons or midnights), 5 & 2 rotating shift as assigned.   

Qualifications

Education/Certification Requirements (within C.B.A.): 

Progression requirements listed in Article XVII 

Physical requirements of the job: 

  • Able to climb (stairs and ladders) to gain access to tanks, railcars, truck trailers, and vessels  

  • Able to lift 50 lbs.  

  • Able to drive a fork truck  

  • Able to bend, squat, and work in various body positions safely and effectively  

  • Able to work outside in various weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, etc.) 

  • Able to provide coverage on weekends, evenings, nights, and holidays as scheduled, on a regular basis 

  • Able to work a reasonable amount of overtime  

  • Able to wear a full face respirator and impervious protective clothing  

MSR requirements: 

This job requires occasional use of CPF III suits and respirators.  The use of an SCBA is also required.  The individual must be medically approved for respirator use and fit tested. 

The safe use of fork trucks, condors and the pickup truck is a requirement.
